June 10, 2019T-Bone Crash, AKA Side Impact Collision Car Accidents
Side impact vehicle collisions can cause catastrophic damage. This type of crash, also known as a T-bone, broadside or right-angle collision, tends to be devastating. This is due partially to the lack of protection on the sides of most vehicles.
Less Protection
Vehicles are generally equipped with more protection from impact at the front and back, or bumpers of the vehicle. Where as the side of a car has little protective layers, there is mostly just door and little else between you and oncoming traffic. Some vehicles have side impact airbags which help some, but they are often not enough in these types of accidents.
Size Matters
All T-bone or side impact car accidents have the potential to cause devastating injuries. However, the damage is significantly worse when one vehicle outweighs the other. Research published by the International Association of Traffic and Safety Sciences found that the “greater weight, stiffer structure, and higher ride height” of trucks give them an advantage when it comes to broadside collisions with passenger cars. Meaning even light trucks handle these types of collisions better, and cause significantly more damage to passenger vehicles and cars. And the passengers in the smaller vehicle incur more severe injuries. The study found this even with light trucks, meaning the level of damage to the smaller vehicle is worse the larger the other vehicle. Making this type of crash particularly dangerous if it involves an 18-wheeler or big rig truck.
